ENGINEERING PROJECT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A WASTE TO ENERGY PLANT USING THE PLASMA GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY IN AS SOMOZAS (GALICIA)

Client: Grupo TOYSAL

Objectives

Galicia is a Spanish territory lacking in energy which, however, generates big quantities of wastes with high energy recovery potential that are being landfilled. The energy recovery of these wastes will produce a quantitative improvement of the Galicia´s energy capacity, what will boost the fulfillment of the Renewable Energy Plan 2005-2010. The objective of the project was to design and elaborate the engineering projects (basic and detailed), as well as the environmental permits processing, for the construction of a waste to energy plant using the plasma gasification technology.

Results

Main services provided by EKOTEK in the framework of this Project were the following: - Technical and Economic Feasibility Study for the use of plasma gasification tecnhnology to the problematic and situation As Somozas - Conceptual Engineering of the proposed solution - Basic Engineering for the construction of the plant - Detailed Engineering - Environmental Impact Assessment for the selected site (As Somozas) - Environmental Permits processing - Administrative Permits processing The treatment capacity of the plant was established in 50.000 Tn/year of hazardous waste, and the plant was designed to produce 15,53 MWe of electricity in combine cycle, from which 5,5 MWe were auto-consumed for the operation of the plant, and the remaining 10,03 MWe were exported to the grid. As subproduct, an inert and non-leachable slag with properties for being used as construction material was obtained. This slag was suitable for brick manufacturing, tiles manufacturing, jewelry, road construction, etc. The plant was designed for 8 working hours per day, 7 days per week, and 330 days per year.
