ELABORATION OF THE ENGINEERING PROJECT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A WASTE TO ENERGY PLANT IN MORELOS STATE (MEXICO)

Client: Grupo USVAC

Objectives

Mexico is a country with two big problems: on the one hand, the huge waste generation and their inadequate management (as most of them are dumped in non-sanitary landfills without pre-treatment and any kind of resource use), and on the other hand, the high energetic dependency of petroleum, what means that when the petroleum of the Mexican Gulf decrease drastically, the country will clearly be energetically dependent of other countries. The objective of this project consisted on the study and proposal of a technical, economic and environmentally friendly feasible solution for the use of the resources of the wastes generated in the State of Morelos. In this way, the wastes generated in Morelos would be transformed into renewable energy for its use by the industry and population of Morelos.

Results

Plasma gasification technology was selected as the most suitable technology because of its high efficiency and low environmental impact in the conversion of wastes into energy. The extremely high temperatures reached in the reactor (about 3.000ºC) and the strictly controlled operation conditions make that by means of this technology a pure and high quality syngas with a calorific value high enough to run a combined cycle is obtained. The plant was designed to process both municipal solid wastes and industrial wastes. The MSW generation in the State of Morelos was 325.000 Tn/year. Once removed inorganic components such as metals, glass, water, etc., the total amount of MSW was reduced to 208.000 Tn/year. If we add the 120.000 Tn/year of organic industrial wastes generated in Morelos, the final total amount of organic wastes to be fed to the reactor was 328.000 Tn/year (41 Tn/h considering 8.000 operating hours per year). The plant was designed as two identical parallel lines, each one composed by a reactor of 20,5 Tn/year, a gas cleaning system and a combine cycle unit. The gross production of electricity was 92,6 MWe, of which 22,6 MWe were used for auto-consumption, and the other 70 MWe were exported to the grid.
