DESIGN AND ENGINEERING OF A WASTE TO ENERGY PLANT FOR THE TREATMENT OF THE WASTE (BIOMASS) PRODUCED IN THE CENTRAL SUPPLIES MARKET OF MEXICO D.F.

Client: Grupo USVAC / Central de Abastos

Objectives

In this case, the problems were caused by the organic wastes generated in the Central Supplies Market of Mexico D.F., together with the Municipal Solid Wastes produced in Iztapalapa Delegation. The objective of the project consisted on the use of the resources of those wastes for the production of electricity for supplying the Central Supplies Market and selling the remaining electricity to the underground of Mexico D.F.

Results

Plasma gasification technology was selected as the most suitable technology because of its high efficiency and low environmental impact in the conversion of wastes into energy. The total amount of wastes inventoried in this project was 240.900 Tn/year, and after removing the inorganic components such as metals, glass, water, etc., the total amount of organic wastes to be fed into the reactor was 169.835 Tn/year. The gross production of electricity of the plant was 46,3 MWe, of which 11,25 MWe were used for auto-consumption of the plant, and the other 35,05 MWe were supplied to the Central Supplies Market and the underground of Mexico D.F.
