Development of safe nanotechnological products

Objectives

Safe production with the minimal environmental impact is a premise that should be applied to all manufacturing sectors. However, in the particular case of advanced technology products such as nanomaterials, identifying, quantifying and assessing the environmental impacts is a complicated task. Considering that premise, the objective of this project is to develop a Life Cycle Assessment (ACV) advanced methodology especially adapted for nanoparticles and/or nanomaterials containing products, as these products have very particular physical and chemical characteristics that make unviable the application of conventional LCA methodologies (ISO 14040:2006, ISO 14044:2006)..

Results

The result of this project is an advanced LCA method for evaluating the environmental impacts associated to nanomaterials/nanoparticles containing products. This methodology covers all stages of the life cycle, from the raw materials obtaining, nanomaterials production, product manufacturing, use and the end-of-life. In addition, this methodology will open the possibility of classifying nanomaterials by their environmental impact, what is an issue on which there is still a great lack of knowledge worldwide and which is one of the greatest challenges of the Nanotechnology Sector. Therefore, it can be said that the development of this methodology will contribute to the sustainable development of the Nanotechnology Sector.
