Biosensors for the prevention and control of microbiological risks in water

Objectives

This project is aimed at the development of new detection methods based on the integration of impedance-measuring devices, using micro- and nano-technology to permit rapid detection of pathogens in water, as an alternative to current methods of control and analysis, which are slow and costly.

Results

The end result of this project comprises of a set of diagnostic methods for the detection of pathogens in water, such as Legionella, E. coli, Clostridium perfringens and enterococci, and that could be extended to detect other pathogens. Biochemical microsystems will be used, manufactured using micro- and nano-manufacturing processes based on electrochemical transduction as bioanalytical tools. The data is processed using a computer platform that offers data to users over the Internet, constituting an important tool to aid preventive decision-making.
