Design and development of a tool for the calculation, reduction and compensation of the Environmental Footprint of Cities

Objectives

The objective of the project consists on the design and development of a software tool for the calculation, reduction and compensation of the CITY FOOTPRINT based on a “Footprint Management Cycle” that includes the CARBON FOOTPRINT, WATER FOOTPRINT and CIRCULARITY FOOTPRINT (all components of the CITY FOOTPRINT). This concept of City Footprint is new and has still not been expressed by the scientific community, so it is absolutely innovative. This footprint is intended to be the quantification / diagnosis of the state of a city regarding the Circular Economy and Circular Metabolism..

Results

The main result of the project is the development of software that will allow cities to calculate the CITY FOOTPRINT, establish projections (scenarios) of the three Footprints (carbon, water and circularity), and propose actions aimed at reducing the three Footprints, based on the critical points detected by the software during their calculation. In addition, the tool will include a portfolio of projects to reduce the City Footprint. By means of this tool, cities will be able to (i) identify the environmental aspects that contribute to Climate Change, the depletion of water resources, the depletion of natural resources and the generation of waste, and their quantification by calculating the CARBON FOOTPRINT, WATER FOOTPRINT and CIRCULARITY FOOTPRINT; (ii) identify the critical points of each footprint, so that take the necessary actions to reduce such footprints; (iii) have the projections in the short, medium and long term for strategic decisions making in the city; (iv) have the possibility of offsetting the carbon footprint to achieve a carbon neutral city; and (v) progress in the change of economic model in the city, making the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy.
