Demonstrating Nanobubbles Technology for more Sustainable and Efficient Urban Wastewater Treatment

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to demonstrate in an operational environment the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of the innovative Nanobubbles (NB) Technology as an efficient, environmentally-friendly and low cost alternative to traditional aerators in Wastewater Treatment (WWT) plants. It is foreseen that the implementation of this technology will enable more sustainable, competitive and legally compliant WWT facilities through the reduction of energy consumption and yield cost-effectiveness. The specific objectives of the project are to: (i) consolidate the Nanobubbles Technology as an innovative solution in WWT plants; (ii) reduce the energy demand of WWT plants; and (iii) facilitate to WWT plants the compliance with the environmental requirements of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC). .

Results

The main outputs of the project will be: (i) a prototype that will demonstrate the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of the Nanobubbles Technology for reducing energy consumption in urban WWT plants for the first time at European level; (ii) a sustainability assessment that will demonstrate the benefits of the technology of the NB considering environmental, economic and social impacts; (iii) a set of protocols for using NB technology in urban WWT plants; and (iv) Production and commercialization plans to deliver a technology ready to enter the markets. By means of this technology it is expected to reach a reduction by 70% of the energy consumption per m3 of treated water and therefore, the GHG emissions, a reduction by 50% of sludge production compared to traditional aerobic processes, a reduction by 60% of the operational costs (OPEX) and a reduction by 30% of the capital costs (CAPEX).
