PROJECT FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE AGRICULTURAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE PROVINCE OF ALMERIA (SPAIN)

Client: Grupo TOYSAL

Objectives

Almeria is the Spanish Province with the biggest concentration of intensive crops, being one of the main areas of vegetable production both for Spain and for exportation. This concentration of greenhouses and intensive crops entails the generation of enormous amounts of wastes that represent an important problem due to the difficulties and few alternatives existing in the Province of Almeria for the waste management. Besides the environmental problem, this huge amount of wastes is an amazing opportunity for obtaining profit from wastes that have been landfilled without any type of recovery until now. The objective of this project consisted on the searching of an innovative, sustainable and profitable solution for the treatment and valorization of the organic wastes produced in Almeria.

Results

EKOTEK inventoried more than 1.000.000 Tn of agricultural and horticultural wastes in the Province of Almeria. The water content of these wastes was 85%, so considering dry basis, the total amount of wastes to be fed was 140.000 Tn/year. In addition to these organic wastes, 40.000 Tn/year of plastic wastes derived from the agricultural activity were also identified, so the total amount available was around 180.000 Tn/year. The best solution found consisted on a waste to energy plant using the plasma gasification technology. This plant would gasify the 180.000 Tn/year of wastes inventoried and 40 MWe of gross power would be produced. In this sense, EKOTEK carried out the conceptualization of the proposed solution, as well as the Technical and Economic Feasibility Study, the Basic Engineering Project, the Detailed Engineering and the Environment Impact Assessment.
